Dr Sanzan Diarra: PhD - Pr Eng. MCIArb
Dr Sanzan Diarra is the Chief Executive Officer of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE), a post he occupies since 2007. He has been a Board member of ZIE from 1992 and served two terms as Deputy President of the Institution for 2000 and 2001.He is currently a member of a number of other Boards including the Board for Research and Intellectual Output –Science, Engineering & Technology Week (RIO-SET) under the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Chairman of the Adjudication Committee of RIO-SET, Chairman of the Celebration College Board of Trustees. He is a member of the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe Accreditation Board and a member of the Institute of Director of Zimbabwe. Dr Diarra worked as an independent consultant in the area of environmental protection and health logistics for the United Nations agencies the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF and UNDP from 2002 to present in over 30 African countries.
In February 1988 Dr Diarra took up a lectureship position at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare where he was also the Coordinator of the BTech programme in Civil engineering. He subsequently joined the National University of Science & Technology (NUST) in Bulawayo in 1994, where he consolidated and chaired the Department of Civi & Water Engineering for 10 years, 1994 to 2004. He has been Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Technology (FIT) on several occasions for many years. In between, he also lectured at the Harare and Bulawayo Polytechnics. His interest of teaching and research lies in the area of structural engineering, construction materials, project management and alternative dispute resolution (ADR). He is a specialist in Dispute Avoidance Boards (DAB), a certified arbitrator and mediator registered with the Commercial Arbitration Centre of Harare and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in the UK. Before relocating to Zimbabwe, Dr Diarra worked as a structural engineer in the consulting unit of the University of Architecture & Civil Engineering in Sofia, Bulgaria and the Structural Engineering Department of the municipality of Sofia, jointly from 1978 to 1988.
Dr Diarra holds an MSc (1978) and PhD (1988) degrees in Civil / Structural engineering from the University of Architecture & Civil Engineering in Sofia Bulgaria, certificates in Arbitration from the UK Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Association of Arbitrators in Southern Africa, certificates in Health Logistics Management, certificates in Vaccines Management Assessment (VMA), Effective Vaccines Stores Management, National Cold Chain Assessment, Rehabilitation and Planning, Healthcare Waste Management, Design and Construction of De Montfort Type Incinerator from the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF.
Dr Diarra is married to Thando an economist. They have two daughters Lillian and Sophie and two sons William and Alexandre.
